If you currently have silver (amalgam) fillings and you’ve had them for a long time, you’ve likely started to notice increased sensitivity around your damaged tooth. This may be especially true when exposed to hot or cold foods and beverages. With tooth-colored fillings, you can not only restore your tooth in a more conservative way, but not have to sacrifice long-term protection in order to do so. Give Dr. Borsky a call to see the difference yourself, and get your tooth restored!
Unlike silver fillings, tooth-colored versions do not use any metal materials whatsoever. When amalgam is placed inside of teeth, it offers long-term protection, but at a cost. As the material expands and contracts after exposure to extreme temperatures, it actively fractures teeth further. This can lead to increased sensitivity and even permanent damage to the tooth. Composite resin is more malleable in comparison, which means it’s not susceptible to the same contractions as amalgam fillings.
After examining your tooth and confirming that a dental filling is the best option moving forward, we’ll start by numbing the tooth and surrounding tissue with local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Then, we’ll apply a special liquid that allows for better bonding of the resin to the tooth. After blending and shading the composite resin to match your existing enamel, we’ll gently mold and shape it inside of your tooth, removing any excess material along the way. Once shaped, which does not require removal of tooth enamel, we’ll harden the material instantly using a special curing light.
