5 Habits to Kick Ahead of Your Dental Implant Treatment

While dental implants are considered to be one of the most effective solutions for replacing teeth, that doesn’t mean they can’t still fail. Thankfully, the most common reason for dental implants failing is not because treatment isn’t safe. Rather, it’s because the person receiving the implant didn’t take the right steps to take care of their oral health. If you plan on getting a dental implant placed, you need to kick these five habits today.

Smoking

Not only is smoking or using tobacco in any form terrible for oral health, but it’s extremely bad for dental implants. It’s important to kick the habit completely if you have a dental implant and it’s especially important immediately following your surgery. Smoking can negatively affect the bone tissue’s ability to heal, increasing the risk of implant failure. If you truly want your implant to last for decades as advertised, you’ll need to kick this habit completely.

Skipping Flossing, Brushing, or Both

Dental implants don’t require any special at-home oral care that’s substantially different than what you performed prior to receiving dental implants. However, just because the restoration that fits over the top of an implant cannot develop decay does not mean that you can’t still run into dental problems. To prevent plaque buildup, you’ll need to floss at least once a day and brush twice a day using fluoridated toothpaste.

Using Your Teeth as a Tool

Both teeth and dental implants are quite strong, but you still need to make sure you use the right tool for the job when you need it. This means using a pair of scissors or box cutter to open packages or a bottle opener to open bottles. If you don’t, you could crack your restoration.

Eating Too Much Sugar

Having a balanced diet is just as important for maintaining a healthy, long-lasting smile as performing daily oral hygiene. Without a diet that consists of enough fruits and vegetables, your body can’t get the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. By cutting back on foods that contain high amounts of sugar and replacing them with healthier alternatives, you can reduce your risk of developing cavities and gum disease.

Skipping Your Routine Dental Checkups

Just like how you would if you didn’t have dental implants, routine checkups are still a part of your long-term oral care. During a checkup and cleaning, a dentist can make sure that your brushing and flossing is keeping decay at bay and that your implant is still in healthy condition.
